Testing Kids 3-D Vision

"The new "Spy Kids 3-D" movie may give parents a unique opportunity to have their kids' eyes tested. It sounds strange, but even though many kids may have 20/20 vision, they may still have an underlying eye condition that prevents them from seeing three-dimensional images.

New therapy 'trains the brain' to see what eyes should do

"About 5 percent to 7 percent of all children in the United States can't properly process three-dimensional images," says Dr. Judy Hughes, a developmental optometrist in Austin. For such children, vision problems mean much more than not being able to fully enjoy the latest summer hit from Austin's Robert Rodriguez. Their reading can suffer because their eyes can't follow a sentence without jumping around. They might avoid sports because their depth perception is off and they can't catch a ball. They can be misdiagnosed as having attention deficit disorder because of what appears to be a short attention span....

If you're a parent with kids heading back to school, it may be a good time to see an eye care professional.ƒ More than 10 million children are estimated to suffer from vision problems, and it may affect learning. But, parents should look beyond just a regular eye exam.
